Itinerary

Day 1| Arrival on Maputo

Upon arrival at the destination, you have to pass immigration control. Have your passport ready to take visa upon arrival, we will help you with that process and the documentation you need to bring with you. Pick up your suitcase and the Mussiro Trips’ staff will be waiting to take you to the hotel, in the upper part of the city, surrounded by acacias and with the seafront just 5 minutes away. You will check-in, rest, and we will take you on a city tour on foot through the most emblematic sites of the city. Then you will have the rest of the day off and we will recommend where to go for dinner. Night at the hotel.

Day 2| Maputo - Kruger National Park (100 Km.)

We will wake up early morning, take a packed-breakfast and get ready to leave Mozambique and cross into the neighbour country South Africa, where our first game drive will start. Kruger National Park is one of the most ancient reserves in the Africa and home of the BIG FIVE (elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard and lion), among hundreds of different species of mammals, birds, reptiles (and amphibious) and trees/plants. Our guide will lead the expedition across the hot points where real wildlife shows its authentic face. We will have a break for a buffet lunch in one of the Rest Camps around and will continue with our adventure in the bush. The night will be inside Kruger or surrounding areas.

Day 3| Kruger National Park

Get ready to wake up before the sun does, as the earlier the better to spot animals. We will carry our breakfast with us and will enjoy it during the game drive. We will continue exploring the Park as is huge and will take you to new areas. Today we will see what we didn’t see yesterday, we know that! 😀

We will give you time in any of the camps to buy some food to take with you for lunch, as we will make the real break in a calm area with nice views of one of the rivers. Then, our safari will go on. Keep fingers crossed as surprises happen all the time. Night in the town of Hazyview.

Day 4| Panorama Route (120km.)

Lucky you! You don’t have to wake so early today, so enjoy breakfast! After that, we will take to visit Graskop Gorge as a first spot of the Panorama Route, where you will enjoy the views from a platform over the gorge; and you will have time to do down to the bottom and enjoy the suspension bridges. Later, we will stop at Lisbon Falls, one of the waterfalls we can find around Mpumalanga Province. Our third stop will be at Bourke’s Luck Potholes, a place with fairy formations on the rocks as a result of deep erosion of water and time and place where the third largest canyon of the world starts. Time for lunch there. Then, we continue to visit the jewel of the day, a breathless landscape: Blyde River Canyon. You will have time to enjoy the place and walk around. Back to Hazyview and night at the hotel.

Day 5| Eswatini (300 km.)

Breakfast and departure to Eswatini (previously known as Swaziland). We will drive around the country and stopping at Mantenga Cultural Village, to appreciate the habits and customs of Swati people. Then, we will go for a panoramic city tour along with the capital, Mbabane, where we will give you time for lunch. And we will sleep in the second most important city in the country, Manzini. Night at the hotel.

Day 6 | Hlane National Park (60 Km. + 150 Km.)

Breakfast and early departure to the dessert, that is what Hlane means, dessert. You are probably thinking in a place with dunes of sand, but actually is a cemetery of beautiful trees looking at the sky and home for many birds. Here you will have the opportunity to stop, among others, the white rhino. This magnificent mammal will be VERY close to you. Enjoy the day with the treasures of Hlane.

After your safari, we will offer you a picnic lunch and then we will drive back to Mozambique, where we will sleep.

Day 7 and 8| Chizavane (270 km.)

Breakfast and departure to the province of Gaza, stopping first in two different towns: Manhiça (important place for a research center to fight against malaria and other diseases) and Macia, where you can get fresh fruits and cashew nuts. Then, we will cross Xai-Xai, the capital of the province of Gaza, where we can have lunch or maybe we can drive directly to Chizavane, where you can enjoy a late lunch overlooking the sea from the dunes (lovely spot!). Night in Chizavane.

The second day here you will have time to enjoy the beach, the swimming pool, to try the oysters, lobsters, etc.

Day 9, 10 and 11| Tofo (230 Km.)

We will have an early breakfast and start our drive up to the Province of Inhambane, where you will be delighted by the lakes of Quissico and the sea of palm trees of Inharrime. Then we will continue to the town and beach of Tofo, located in Inhambane Peninsula, where we will arrive for lunchtime. We will do the check-in so you can drop your bags and walk around the nice restaurants around and look for a good seafood; lobster is a star dish. Night at lodge.

The second day we will wake up with the sound of ocean waves hugging us. Breakfast will be at the time we wish and we will meet at the reception to enjoy an Oceanic Safari, in search of the biggest fish in the oceans, the whale shark. In this safari, there is also the possibility of watching turtles, dolphins, mantas and humpback whales (only from July to October). The encounter with the whale shark is a memory for a lifetime. You can swim with it, by its side. In the afternoon, when you have free time, you can explore the area, enjoy the beach, visit the markets, walk to the neighboring beach of Tofinho, join the fishermen and fisherwomen and help them in collecting mussels and oysters, etc.

The third day, you can try a diving experience, practice some yoga, enjoy the beach or discover Barra, where flamingos use to be around, hundreds of starfishes live and a very endearing and shy little animal that hides among the algae, the seahorse.
And then after lunch we will drive up to Vilankulos, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn and appreciating the huge trees (baobabs) surrounding us.

Day 11, 12 and 13| VIilankulos (315 Km.)

Tofo and Barra have been already explored and the last Mozambican jewels are waiting for us in Vilankulos, where we will arrive at night and rest in a hotel.

The second day we have a surprise for you: we will take you to explore the Archipelago of Bazaruto, visiting two of the islands: Bazaruto and Benguerra. Turtles, dolphins and dugongs live around and you will have time to snorkel in an amazing reef and also to climb the high dunes of Bazaruto. Lunch is included and so does breakfast.

The third day you can just rest or maybe to hire a tour to Santa Carolina Island, also known as Paradise Island –we really recommend to take part in this expedition. You will love it! Otherwise, just enjoy the beach, walk around and don’t miss sunrises and sunsets.

Day 14 and 15| Maputo (700 km.)

We are driving back to Maputo, and probably taking a packed-breakfast with us as a long drive is waiting for us, so the sooner we leave the better. We will stop you at Chidenguele Lagoon, where you will have time to have an early lunch and enjoy a quick bath in this hidden lake before continuing our way down to the capital. In a day on the road, but once back in Maputo we will recommend a nice place for the last dinner herein Mozambique. Night at the hotel.

Maia Lal, on GMB

Family Traveller

We returned from a 2 week holiday in Mozambique combined with a safari at Kruger National Park in December, organised by Mussiro trips. We had been looking for something special to celebrate my dad’s 60th birthday.
Mussiro trips created a bespoke 2 week itinerary, which enabled us as a family of 6 to have a wonderful holiday. Our 2 week holiday comprised of 3 days safari in Kruger National Park where we stayed in excellent accommodation within the park. Simba was our guide during the safari and he possessed a wealth of knowledge about the animals on the reserve especially on birds.

We then travelled back to Mozambique and spent one night at Chizavane to rest en route to our journey to Tofu. We explored the beach at sunrise and the views were breathtaking, but this only touched the surface of what we saw next on our travels.

We then travelled to Tofu from Chizavane. We stayed at Tofo Mar, a beautiful hotel nestled on the beach front with breathtaking views. We ventured out into the ocean with Diversity Scuba to look for dolphins and whales; we were very lucky as we spotted a number of dolphins and were able to snorkel with them. A short distance from Tofo beach you can also travel to Bara beach which is very secluded but equally as beautiful.

Having spent 3 days at Tofu we travelled to Vilanculos staying at the wonderful Archipelago Lodge. Again we were not disappointed with the stunning views, beaches and our day trip to Bazaruto Island was really memorable. Bazaruto Island is filled with sand dunes which is only a short climb to the top, where you will see the beautiful Indian ocean surrounding you. We had spent the day swimming, snorkelling and trying to spot various marine life like turtles and dugong.

Both Tofo and Vilanculos beach embody this endless coastline stretch with the warm and clear turquoise waters, which are an unending and uninterrupted beauty, unspoilt and drenched in charm by the local inhabitants.

We travelled in a safari truck which was well equipped and very comfortable for a family of 6. Our driver was Taibo who was very nice and accommodated all our requests. The truck was always stocked with lots of snacks and plenty of water.

Our trip organised by Mussiro trips was extremely professional and everything ran according to the itinerary. All communication and organisation with them could not be faulted from the initial planning, to our arrival at the airport to the end of our trip. Upon our arrival at Maputo airport, one of our bags had been left behind in our connecting flight. Mussiro trips went above and beyond to resolve the situation were they spoke with the airport staff and had arranged to collect our bag from the airport. Arrangements had been made for the bag to be delivered to us a day later – which was a huge relief. Even when we crossed the border from Mozambique into South Africa everything went smoothly – as both Simba and Taibo were with us to ensure everything went without a hitch. Fernando, Igor, Simba and Taibo are such a great team and fun. They even provided us with local sim cards to facilitate contact throughout the trip.

Our trip was excellent value for money for a 2 week holiday. So much thought and consideration had gone into the trip and is clear that Mussiro trips are promoting their love of Mozambique, which has not gone unnoticed.

What we wanted from the holiday was to create unforgettable memories for my dad’s 60th birthday, but also explore and see something different and Mussiro trips delivered on every level pulling out all the stops. We wouldn’t hesitate recommending Mussiro trips for arranging your holiday, you will be forever longing to visit Mozambique again and again as it is a special place.
